Add Some Spice to Your Rituals with Salt – Here’s How

Sprinkle sass and magic into your rituals with these tips on how to use salt like a pro.

In witchcraft, you can’t do without salt. Salt has many uses in witchcraft, including protection, cleansing, and blessing. It is often used as an ingredient in spells, potions, and charms, or placed around a person or space as a protective boundary. It can be used to anoint candles and objects, sprinkled onto doors and windowsills, and added to baths for cleansing and purification.

The Salt Science

For my spell work I prefer to use our Himalayan Salt, this beautiful pink/peach form of rock salt (halite) which is mined exclusively in the Punjab region of Pakistan. Look. I’m not gonna judge if you want to use table salt or whatever. That’s your call. All I’m saying is, I love the pink color and it looks pretty magnificent on my altar.

Magickally speaking, salt is salt. Magick doesn’t care if it’s Himalayan salt or if it’s some cheap home brand table salt. So, use whatever kind of salt you like, keep a stash in your witch kit! It’s an awesome thing to have laying around for when you wanna make some magic!

The Ritual

  1. Measure out a specific amount of salt into a bowl.
  2. Add corresponding oils, herbs, and crystals to supercharge your salt.
  3. Set your intention for the ritual and focus your energy while holding the bowl of salt.
  4. Hold your hand over the bowl of salt and bless it with a few drops of water, invoking the aid of any gods or goddesses you wish to call upon.
  5. Sprinkle the blessed salt around the edges of the room, or the space in which you will be performing your ritual.
  6. Add a few pinches of salt to each candle, incense, and offering you will use during the ritual.
  7. Fill a bathtub or bassin with warm water and add a handful of salt. As you do so, speak aloud your intention for this time of cleansing.
  8. Sit in the bathtub or take a shower with the salted water, and relax as the salt works its magic on your body, mind and soul.
  9. When finished, allow the salt water to drain away
  10. Brush the salt from your room.

Closing Your Ritual

Take 3 deep breaths in gratitude. Feel your confidence grow, that your intentions will be manifested. Sip on hot tea such as fresh mint or a hibiscus infusion to focus your thinking by refreshing your body and mind. Hold your ritual crystal and know how it will help you manifest your intentions.

Salt & it’s Properties

Salt is a cleanser. Salt is used when we cast circles and bless items; it is used when Sumo wrestlers purify the ring before a fight; it is used when a kitchen witch scrubs down their tabletop; it is used when a Christian priest wishes to cast out demons; it is used when a butcher wants to kill germs. Salt is the ultimate cleansing agent, killing not just microbes but malicious or negative magicks, holding them at bay and driving them out.

Salt is a barrier. Salt lines around doors, windows, beds and even houses have been used for thousands of years as methods of driving back dark forces and keeping bad spirits at bay. Negative magick and bad spirits cannot cross a line of salt, and often touching it is said to be enough to kill them (or at least burn them). Scattering salt grains before a fae will force the fae to stoop to count every single grain, because they’re a bit obsessive and can’t leave it alone.
