A natural volcanic glass, it is named after the Roman explorer Obsidius who discovered it in Ethiopia however, it has been used prior to the Neolithic period for tools and blades. It occurs in volcanic lava flows which have cooled suddenly in contact with air or water. Gold Sheen Obsidian has the addition of tiny light-reflecting gas bubbles giving it the appearance of stardust when it is moved around.
