Mugwort, and why witches have always trusted her
Mugwort is not a gentle plant.
She is not here to soothe you into comfort or wrap things up nicely.
She is here to open perception, sharpen inner sight, and guard the thresholds between worlds.
That is why witches have always kept her close.
Long before Mugwort became something you occasionally see in modern ritual kits, she was worked with by cunning folk, midwives, seers, and dreamers. She belongs to the night, to liminal spaces, to moments where reality thins and intuition needs to be trusted more than logic.
I do not use Mugwort casually.
And I do not recommend that anyone does.
Mugwort as a witch’s plant
In witchcraft, Mugwort is a plant of vision and protection.
She is traditionally used for:
- divination and scrying
- spell work that requires clarity and focus
- dream work and lucid dreaming
- protection while traveling between states of consciousness
- guarding the space during ritual
Mugwort does not force visions.
She clears the noise so what is already there can be perceived.
That distinction matters.
When Mugwort smoke moves through a space, the mind often quiets first. Thoughts slow. Sensory awareness sharpens. The body becomes more receptive. This is the state witches have always sought before working magic, not because it is dramatic, but because it is precise.
Working with the unseen
Mugwort has long been associated with working across thresholds. Between waking and dreaming. Between the conscious and the intuitive. Between the visible and the unseen.
This is why she is often called upon before divination or spell work that requires listening rather than commanding.
I use Mugwort when I want to:
- listen more deeply
- receive information rather than push for answers
- work with intuition without interference
- protect the space while opening perception
Mugwort and the dream world
One of Mugwort’s oldest roles is as a dream ally.
Many witches burn Mugwort lightly before sleep, or keep it near the bed, not to induce dreams artificially, but to make the dream space safer and clearer.
Dreams under Mugwort tend to be:
- vivid
- symbolic
- instructive
- less chaotic
Again, restraint matters. Mugwort is not meant to be burned heavily at night. A small amount is enough. Too much can overstimulate rather than protect. As always, the plant sets the pace.
Protection without force
Mugwort is often misunderstood as aggressive.
She is not.
Her protection comes from clarity, not confrontation. When the mind is clear and perception is sharp, fewer things slip through unnoticed.
This is why Mugwort has been used historically in cleansing and protective practices, and why she also carries natural antimicrobial properties. Physical and energetic protection have always been intertwined in folk magic.
Protection is not about fighting.
It is about awareness.
Sourcing matters, especially with a plant like this
Because Mugwort is powerful, how it is sourced matters deeply to me.
I source my Mugwort from a WFTO-certified supplier, ensuring:
- fair wages for farmers and producers
- no child labour
- ethical working conditions
- respect throughout the supply chain
I do not work with plants harvested through exploitation.
I do not believe you can ask for clarity while ignoring harm.
This Mugwort is grown and harvested with respect. That respect carries through when it is burned.
How I recommend working with Mugwort
Mugwort is not an everyday incense.
I recommend working with her:
- before ritual or spell work
- before divination
- when preparing for dream work
- when you need protection during inner work
- when perception feels clouded
Use very little.
Light briefly.
Let the smoke move, then stop. Mugwort works best when you leave space for silence afterwards.
A final word, witch to witch
Mugwort is witch’s medicine.
She sharpens.
She guards.
She opens doors and stands watch while you look through.
If that is what you are asking for, she will meet you there.

Verily, there are endless mysteries and wonders to discover within the art of smoke rituals.
