Sodalite is known for its opulent royal blue colour, and is often streaked with white veins and mottled with patches white, grey, green or pink. In 1811 it was initially discovered in Ilimaussaq, Greenland but didn’t find favour until around 1891 when it became popular as an ornamental stone when extensive deposits were found in Ontario, Canada. Blue by day it holds a secret by night. It will fluoresce orange under ultraviolet light. Adored by the aristocracy it was even used to decorate the royal residence, Marlborough House in London.
